Aaron CO1
On Monday I observed Vicky Ledbetters foundations speaking class. After the class started, we did introductions and everyone said their name, where they're from, and something about themselves. I was caught off guard because I thought I was supposed to keep quiet and not participate. After explaining to the class I'm studying Arabic, some of the Arabs in the class asked "why" and "where do you want to go?" I told them Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. One student told me to go to Kuwait. After the introductions, Vicky told the class that today's lesson was going to be about money. She then emptied a paper bag on the table filled with money. She spread out the money and started going over the different coins. The class asked her about half dollars and she told them she didn't have one and that they are uncommon. She asked me if I ever see or use them and I told the class I haven't seen one in a long time. When going over the pronunciation of quarter there was some difficulty. After repeating the word so much she seemed to forgot the proper pronunciation, which I definitely can relate to. Other than coins she had a one, five and ten dollar bills. The class seemed to be enjoying themselves. Most of the students were talking and looked comfortable. There was one student who seemed very shy and didn't say much. I didn't catch her name in the introductions, because she was so quiet. After a short explanation of each coin, Vicky put the students in groups of two and we did an exercises. Because there was an uneven amount of students, she gave me a partner. He was also pretty quiet, but had a good understanding of the material. His name was Naif (I have no idea how its spelled). He did a great job and got all the answers right. After the exercise, she gave pictures of paper money and coins and asked the students to tell her the amount. They did have some mistakes. A few of them kept mixing up the -ty with -teen, like fifty with fifteen. Soon after a few students partipated, the class was over. It went by extremely fast. The students seem very resposive to the teacher and I felt like they were having a great time while learning.

That's interesting that a Speaking class would have a lesson on money, but I guess it's really very logical, I mean of course it's a topic about which they'll need to be able to communicate. Great, simple idea. Makes me realize that if I was ever in the classroom, desperate because I hadn't planned a lesson, I could just dump out my purse. Boom. Lesson.
ReplyDeleteGreat observation, Aaron. Glad you could get in and participate as well.
