Lucy CP-4

Met with Awad again last night. Guess it isn’t Awaad after all, just double checked the Tutoring Sign-up sheet.  We had a fun time. I was hungry but afraid to go out to eat with him this time, because I knew he would want to buy and I don’t want to spend these guys’ money!
We met again at Black Dog and did a lap around the lake, chatting about our future plans and picking out the cars and houses we would own some day. He told me to come teach in Saudi Arabia. I asked him if Saudi Arabians really like Americans very much? He wisely imparted that there are the good and the bad, just like here.
I decided we should go to Lofty Pursuits, since I’ve never been, and neither has he, and everyone just raves about it. And Olumayowa and Zach work there. (By the way guys, a nice co-worker of yours, she had big blue glasses, gave us the hook-up- tell her thanks again!) And I needed to try it out anyway since Tay and I are late night ice cream eaters. So off we went, with directions via my iphone which I misread oh, 4,5 times. Many a U-turn. We finally made it and enjoyed a long walk around the plaza there and a discussion of the different shops. He discovered what pottery meant and I’m already thinking a pottery date could be really fun. So we make it to Lofty Pursuits and wow! Fantastic! I got the Whoopie Pie (?) ice cream- the most chocolatey one, according to blue glasses, and Awad got a Toffee Caramel that just knocks your socks off. Dang. What a fun place! I am loving these Tallahassee discoveries!
We sat and talked family and friends and then got up and walked the plaza some more. A music shop had posters advertising concerts in the window (‘nother idea for these meetings) and La Provence let us discuss how fancy and romantic the French are.  We got back in the car and I hurriedly tried to find activity number two, since Awad wanted to keep the meeting going, and found a Bob Dylan concert going on at Mockingbird. Yesterday was Dylan’s 71st birthday, and a band played his music from 7-10. We enjoyed the drive back, talking music and cars, and Awad cracked up over street names. “Micosukee” just tickled him pink. He repeated or asked me to repeat it all night. “Mee-koh-soo-kee” he would squeal. Wait’ll I tell him “Weewah” as in Weewahitchka. I tried to explain the existence of Native Americans to him, but I don’t know that it registered. Maybe a trip to the Florida History Museum? Boy, I’m good at this.
The band was alright, and I pulled up some Dylan lyrics for Awad to follow along with as he listened. They were less expressive than Dylan, but did some numbers really well.  A tip jar let me explain to Awad the concept of ‘tipping’ what you like in the U.S.. I went over and tipped a bit to show him what I meant. I told him how Dylan was absolute “Americana”, like the crème de la crème of our culture, a folk singer, a kind of underdog, an idol. It was such a perfect find to introduce to a foreign student, and I was super happy we attended.
The night ended after that, but I think we’ll be doing more live music next week. The Aphrodisiac has a Jazz Concert next Wednesday at 8, so I think we may try to check that out. Music, like food, is one of those easily shared, fun things to do together. And a real connecting point. Praise Allah and Jesus. I'd say they were probably both music lovers, wouldn't you?
