Ted Hong - TP7

On Tuesday, May 22, I met with Butsawan and Rose once again. This time, I didn't get to work with Rose directly, but she went along with exercises and comprehension I had with Butsawan. I seemed to have misplaced my notes on that session but I remember most of it... eee)

Butsawan was going to have a debate in class about the legalization of marijuana, and she had the counter argument side. She had prepared an extensive powerpoint, which turns out she would not be using during her debate. She says it's her way of organizing her points and I thought it seemed quite effective - she made points succinct, it followed tight ideas, had quotes, etc.

So I was going on and on about pronouncing certain words (marijuana, automobile, bronchial/bronchitis) and was trying to be as thorough so she was completely prepared. Little did I know that the debate was actually her next class.

So I went on to figure out the structure of the debate and it was rather daunting at first as it was very particular. She had 5 minutes to place her arguments - new ideas and/or counterexamples - but she kind of read things word for word, which took a bit of time. I suggested to her certain shortcuts that would still present the idea and its source.

I briefly went over being interactive in the discussion, taking note on others points and then referring back to her notes to counter rather than reading off her entire powerpoint (which was heavily developed).

Unfortunately, I spent a good portion of time with pronunciation that I only got to briefly discuss other tactics. A faux pas on my part for not figuring out when her debate was and adjusting plans accordingly, but I think she did well. I'm sure she did well. She had all her preparation done but was more concerned on the actual presentation and such. So, I'll have to ask her about that next time.

  1. It would be great to see if the debate was recorded. This could be useful for you both to listen to and analyze for grammar, pronunciation and delivery.
