Monday night I went with my conversation partner to see the Avengers. I have to admit, I'm more of a historical drama person myself but I thought perhaps that wasn't everyone's preference. I made sure that before we saw the movie we talked about cinema trends back in his home country of Burkina Faso and learned that they have quite a booming movie industry over there. He told me about the popular movies (action, drama, etc) but said that they didn't have comic book movies like us but that he had seen Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk with sub-titles...more movies than even I have seen from this genre! I think it actually worked out quite well because I had seen Thor and the Iron Man movies so together we could kind of piece the storylines together. He followed the movie really well, there were only a couple times where the audience was laughing (including me) and I noticed that he perhaps hadn't quite understood the joke. However, after the movie I asked him some questions about what had happened to the characters and plot and he answered them very well. At some points, he even had to explain some things to me!
The whole excursion was really fun and proved to be a great conversation starter. We theorized about why the characters would have even gotten together in the first place and he explained what had happened in the other Comic book movies he had seen.  He also made note of some colloquialisms which appeared in the movie and asked me to explain them to him so that he could use them in his everyday language. I think that the most challenging aspect of conversation for him is speaking because if he could follow Tony Stark's witty comments then I think he can understand just fine!

  1. Nothing is more American than the Comic Book film! I know that people have been very excited to see this latest one as well. Total cultural immersion!
