Aaron TP3

On Tuesday I met for the second time with one of my partners. After our first meeting I told Fahad to tell me if there was anything specific he wanted to work on. I asked  about his interests and he told me he was interested in design technology and photography, Ironically two things I know nothing about. I searched the Internet for vocab on these subjects and found some good lists, but explaining these terms to my partner would be extremely hard because of my lack of knowledge on the subject. I made a list of vocab words of terms I though would be useful in his writing and understanding of American culture. The terms included Influence, subtle, obvious, deny, jury, judge, confidence, testimony, as well as some others. I start with him repeating the word a few times, and then writing it. I start  by giving the simplest definition I can come up with. Quite a few times I had to explain other words in the definition such as trust in the definition of confidence.  I always attempt to give a long explanation of different uses of particular words. When describing influence I told him how one can influence a person in a good way, as well as a bad way. I told him  also about how money can influence a person or a political system. After giving a thorough definition I give the Arabic term. The Arabic term doesn't always coincide directly with the English, so it can get a little confusing. Sometimes I pick the wrong term because of my limited knowledge of Arabic. After giving a good explanation  I ask him to use it in a sentence at least twice. Sometimes it takes a little more explaining. While going through some Law terms, I shortly explained to him how are justice system works. After vocab we focused on grammar. He had previously told be he was confused about past perfect and present perfect, which was something my other tutoring partner was confused about. he picked up on it really fast. I had printed out something I found on the Internet, which explained it simply and was a lot of help. After our session we talked a little about religion and I gave him the English terms and he gave me the Arabic term(EX. Caliphate, Khalifa). He was impressed with my Knowledge on Arab/Muslim history which made me feel pretty good.

  1. Creating vocabulary lists separate form context does make explanation of providing context a b it more challenging. Taking vocabulary from a reading or listening can be helpful to provide this context, especially because many words are so context dependent.
