Allyce-TP2

Wednesday I tutored my second student, Metib  and had a very different experience from my first. First off, his biggest focus was on writing. Unfortunately...he didn't really feel like doing anything so instead we just practiced talking a bit and getting to know each other. I normally would have tried to make them do some form of work since he was a tutor partner as opposed to a conversation partner but he honestly looked quite beat. I did however keep steering the conversation back towards potential activities we could do during our next sessions to help him improve writing. He really like the idea of having me create a writing prompt, let him do a timed writing and then have me correct it.
Luckily, we had one main similar interest, Criminology. He is planning on receiving a Masters in Criminology and was curious to know what kind of books they used here. I was really excited because my minor was in Criminology so I am somewhat familiar with the field (Although he informed me he hates history!). I promised to look up some of the textbooks I used in my classes and give him a list so that he could check them out from the Library or read them online. I think this will be really helpful because he does have experience in the criminology field in his home country but he is not completely familiar with the vocabulary we use over here. I didn't take too many upper level Criminology courses so most of my knowledge is basic but I think it will still come in use.
He also is very curious about the GRE and hopes to take it at the end of the Summer. Although he took some of the courses over at Kaplan he said he had a hard time following the teacher because he spoke too fast so I agreed to help him with that as well. I still have a lot of my GRE vocab flash cards...I always knew they would be useful again!

A book by one of our very own Professors here at FSU!

  1. I don't know what Metib's reading level is, but make sure he isn't trying to read things that are way over his ability. Timed writing and feedback will be good practice for the both of you.

  2. I can totally relate in that sometimes it is hard to keep tutoring sessions on track because XinWen and I can get pretty off topic sometimes with our conversations.
