My third tutoring partner was again, very different from the rest (I love having 3 different tutees with completely different personalities!). First off, he complimented me on my sandals and pedicure right away and then looked at me for a minute and exclaimed, "I can't believe you are a WOMAN!" I was puzzled by what he meant because the look on his face reflected genuine shock. I asked him why he was so surprised and he replied "Well...you text like a man!" I can honestly say no one  has ever told me that before and it was hilarious! After a good laugh he explained how relieved he was that I was female because I would most likely be much more talkative and give him a better chance to practice. He is a really personable fellow so we hit it off right away.
He told me that his main focus is on reading, particularly with subjects relating to the Psychology field and that he wanted to start practice reading right away! I didn't really have any books on me but luckily I had brought my Kindle Fire. After browsing through my library, I was able to find one book that had a scientific theme running through it, Mosquito Empires by J.R. McNeil. Although the book was still based upon historical arguments I think he found it somewhat interesting. I basically had him start off  by reading out loud, listening, taking notes of common errors and tried to encourage him when he was able to figure out words. I also stopped him after each paragraph and had him explain to me what the gist of that section was and he did awesome!
The most common grammar mistake that I have found is when one should pronounce the long or short vowel sounds.  I wrote out several examples from the vocabulary in the book and went over how to pronounce and whey they were pronounced that way. He was really grateful and wrote down any words that may be useful to him in his field.  Our basic plan of action from now on is for me to find a psychology related article before our sessions, bring it with me, and have him read it out loud  and go over the vocabulary. I'm also discouraging him from using the translator. I think that trying to explain the vocab in other words will allow him to remember them more clearly.

  1. I believe there's a magazine entitled "Psychology Today" with easy to read articles- although I can't vouch for it's empirical and scientific value. Also, if you're still a registered FSU student, the PsycInfo database has a bajillion articles. Perhaps even just reading the abstracts to these would be helpful.
