On Friday night Ladji my conversation partner from the Ivory Coast came over for dinner and much like the dinner with Alena on Wednesday night we had a blast. When we arrived at my house I introduced him to the family and we set out some ground rules on separating tutoring time from conversation partner time. We tutored before dinner while my wife was cooking (which I will talk about in my tutoring blog) and we transitioned to conversation partners during dinner and after.
Once dinner was served (which was mexican soup yum!) we all talked for a great deal of time on a number of topics. He told us about life in Africa because he has lived in more than just the Ivory Coast which i found most interesting. While many english speakers find it difficult to learn a second language Ladji puts us all to shame with being fluent in French, three different African languages, and is currently learning English (which he speaks very well). ( I am also going to try and not mention that he took German class in high school, show off) You do not have to be around Ladji more than say 60 seconds to guess that he likes soccer with his cleats still on from the field that I picked him up from to his athletic windbreakers that he is wearing in perhaps 90 degrees. That all pales in comparison to the fact that the guy basically breaths to play soccer. I told him that I am particularly bad at soccer but that I am an Ultimate Frisbee lover. He was most curious about the sport of Ultimate which he had recalled see it being played at FSU.
After dinner I took him out on the golf course that I live on and we tossed a frisbee around for more than an hour till we could no longer see outside. Overall we had an amazing time and I hope to be able to hit a sports field with him soon.
I know, it is amazing how many languages many Africans can speak, as well as the preservation of culture and identity through language. Sounds like you guys are getting on just fine!
ReplyDeletePhysical activity with conversation partners is so much fun! It really breaks it up and melts away any sort of nervous tension.
