Last Monday I went to Karins Level 1A Speaking Class. I arrived about 45 seconds late due to my lunch with Rose and felt awful about it.
I was struck by the contrast in confidence from Karin and Vicki. Karin had a very authoritative and confident demeanor, but was also kind and cheerful. She was very organized and wrote her agenda on the board and knew all the students by name. She was not afraid to call them out or assign "volunteers" as necessary.
The students have been working on phone etiquette. They began by reviewing some of the terminology one might use in certain situations and why. Karin asked the students for this information, would elaborate upon it, and ask the students for examples, and then she would explain why it was more polite to use certain phrases on the telephone in certain situations.
She then invited me to join the class for a group activity. She broke the class into pairs, and one partner had a slip with about 8 scenarios, and the other had corresponding scenarios. (such as: A class a doctors office to set an appointment. B is a receptionist at a doctors office). The paired students then went through the activity together while the teacher kept a watchful, but subtle eye. When we had completed the scenarios we were asked to pick one and perform it for the class. Karin allowed the students to go through the whole scenario before providing any feedback on grammatical errors. She would try and prompt the student to correct it himself, which often worked. She would then repeat the correct phrase and sometimes give reasons why that was the correct way to say things. My partner and I rocked it with him asking a fellow student out to the movie. Obtaining a fake date scenario? Success!
We were then broken into groups of three and the students were asked to open their binders up to a lesson on going to/might/i would like to. Karin went over the lesson briefly (they had worked on it before) and asked each group to write sentences based on 100% sure (I will) 75% sure (I might) 50, and 25%. I was in the 100% group and tried to keep back for this exercise to allow the students to get the most out of it, while still participating. The papers were attached to the walls and each group read through them. Again, Karin waited until after they were done to provide feedback.
All in all a solid class that did not lag, was very productive, and was over before we knew it!
Good job on getting the date! What movie did you see?
ReplyDeleteGreat observations on error correction based on a communicative activity. Were you able to ask if students will be quizzed or allowed to review their errors later?
I don't know about the quizzes. But it seemed error review was instantaneous!
