Yoshimi is a girl from Japan . When I met with her for the first time at CIES this Wednesday, I was impressed with her politesse. Her listening skills are obviously better than her speaking skills. When I talked to her, she could understand what I had said. However, it was evident that she could not pronounce correctly and could not speak English fluently.
I was very interested when I knew her major was music therapist since it was related to my major- educational psychology. Moreover, I could strongly feel that her passion for her major from her journal about her dream. According to her journal about dream, I found that she had some basic grammar knowledge to help her come up with a number of simple sentences. What she should concentrate more on is how to combine simple sentences into complex or compound sentences by using connectors. The other aspect she should improve is her vocabulary. Expanding her vocabulary as soon as possible could promote her expression more effectively in her productive abilities, such as speaking and listening, and build up her self-confidence.
After I got useful placement information about Yoshimi’s skills, I made a decision that I would tutor her twice a week in order to help her improve more quickly. It is also obvious that she is a hard worker and I believe that she will try her best to enhance her English abilities in a short time.
Xueping, you make some important observations that are common to students. Vocabulary building and sentence development are dependent on each other. Try working on the sentence level, building up to the paragraph level. Great work!
