Last week, I picked up XinWen to go get some coffee. First, I had her do her tutee feedback form so we didn't forget about it. Since class was not in session, she did not have any particular writing, reading, etc. type of assignments for me to help her with. Thus, we decided to just focus on her speaking for the day. We went to Starbucks and made a little culture lesson of it. Since it was our last tutoring session, I decided to make it fun by having us discuss celebrities and music. "Celebrity" was a new word for her. I was quite surprised at that.
Thus, I busted out the iPhone and began to show her pictures of different stars. The only actors we really chatted about were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie because XinWen wanted to focus more on musicians. She already knew some major names like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Lady Gaga. However, she did not know Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, and Katy Perry. She had heard some of their music before (mainly Britney) but didn't know who it was who sang the songs. She also did not know what a "rapper" was or what genre rap was. Therefore, we discussed Lil Wayne and Pitbull.
Overall the day was quite fun and successful, XinWen learned many new terms related to pop culture and I think that she was genuinely interested in the conversation.
Questionably a tutoring session, but I guess this is how things go at times.
