Ted Hong - TP12

For this session with Butsawan and Rose, I met with them at the Lake Jackson Branch Library.

During this session, I went through the process of getting degrees at TCC and FSU for Rose. We talked about transcripts, TOEFL, degree requirements, scholarships, etc. I distinguished the difference between getting an AS degree which is more geared toward vocational type work. When I wrote out vocation and asked if they knew, they said it sounded like something where you would go and take a break and have fun.

She was looking hopefully for scholarships and I told her to beware of some scams that ask for your information, a submission fee, etc. "Scam" was another new vocabulary covered.

I discussed with Rose (and Butsawan added her input, well) about some foreseeable hardships in her plans attending college/university level classes as a foreign student. I told her that readings will be long and gave her some suggestions in extensive and intensive reading. I told her before she actually does take any classes, she should practice doing extensive reading first then intensive reading. I've no doubt that she'll give it a shot because she is quite the persevering students.

She rented a sitcom from the library to utilize some of the practice skills I had told her, as well as some other movies. I introduced "made-up" in describing fiction. They immediately jumped to "make-up", though.

I went over the things I had employed in previous tutoring sessions briefly to remind them that it can be of help to them in the future. We went over some pronunciation practice, going over the "th" sound with words like father, smooth, the, this, thank, bathtub. The "ur/er" sound with girl and first. Corrected them in saying "adult" instead of "ad-oolt". Also, went a little bit more in depth with slang as I gave them "Urban Dictionary" books. In retrospect, I don't feel if that was the best gift to give them in regards to them improving on English... as it might go another way. I reminded them that there are circumstances and appropriate settings to using these words so take caution. Yeeeeeeep.

After that, we just hung out a bit and agreed to meet again this Friday. It was a nice relaxing session for it's last.
