Olumayowa TP-12

I plan to be out of Tallahassee for many days during my summer vacation so I came up with the idea of keeping up with my tutoring partners during the week with by Skyping. Joe is the only one so far who uses Skype so I decided to start with him, also because I knew we'd mostly be practicing speaking so he might be the only TP I have who will feel comfortable with this. Our session digressed a lot with a lot of caturday pictures, but it was in an English language learning context (I swear!). We normally meet in Starbucks or on Landis Green so being on the internet gave me a lot more freedom to continuously pull up new material to keep the session going. In a little less than two hours we managed to read more than half a dozen restaurant menus (lofty pursuits and a bunch of chain restaurants' are available online), pamphlets/brochures(florida state parks!), short story excerpts (my own fiction/non fiction stories) and play a little Scrabble as we were speaking casually in between reading. I'll likely be trying this again with my conversation partners rather than other tutoring partners because we often reached the gray area when we were just hanging out rather than getting work done. This was just a test run in my bedroom but hopefully I can get a netbook and be able to do this while swinging in my hammock in a campground. Futuristic!

  1. This is great! We are actually going to start to do this with the TEFL and ITAs this session to see what the students think about this kind of online exchange. Look forward to hearing how things develop with you Mayowa!

  2. Skype can also help you attend classes you would otherwise miss. Ask me how I know......
