Joe and I met last week in Strozier library on a very rainy day. It was pretty hilarious because we both had no umbrellas and had ran fair distances in the howling wind, rain, and lightning. We met on couches inside Starbucks, both soaking wet and shivering, nursing hot cups of coffee.
He was super excited because his department had received a new piece of expensive scientific equipment and he was chosen to learn how to operate it, therefore becoming the person in charge of it. He proceeded to tell me a bunch of stuff about electromagnets and heat capacity that I will never understand. Joe is studying electromagnets here so that he can go back to his country and become a leading scientist in their agenda to have a bullet train industry like Japan, China, e.t.c. He says that he isn't really interested in trains, but they will be a great way for him to gain experience in electromagnets and become well known in his field. Ideally he'll finish his doctoral degree on time and find a job back home so that he can buy a house and car to start a family like his mates back home. I come from a culture that emphasizes the importance of settling down and starting a family early so I totally understood where he is coming from.
He wanted to know why I am choosing to teach English as a career and I was honest in telling him that I just want to travel and have fun around the world for the next decade or so. I think it's great that we get along because Joe and I are very different people; he thinks I'm crazy for wanting to be so unstable and poor, and I think he's boring for being so practical, but we can express these opinions to each other and look at each others' point of view with curiosity. In his opinion I'd have a better time in Thailand than I would in Korea or China because the food is better, living can be cheaper, and I have lots more places to explore on land and sea. I totally forgot the name but he says he'll soon be taking me to a Thai restaurant in Tallahassee to show me some reasons why I should visit Thailand. My belly is interested!
