I went to
meet Yasmina again at the same time and place on Thursday like we agreed upon
previously. I called her and she told me that she was out of town and that we
would reschedule our meeting for Tuesday. Sure enough, Tuesday rolled around
and she was at our predetermined meeting spot. She was on the phone again and
waved at from a distance, finishing the phone call as I walked up to greet her.
She was still working out paperwork for her transferal; today it was getting
her insurance information together for her transfer. She then explained that the
reason that she missed our previous meeting was due to the fact that she took
an extended weekend trip to Panama City Beach with her roommates. They
apparently spent the weekend lounging on the beach and drinking. She informed
me that this was the first time she had been to the beach since moving to the
United States. She said she needed
a break from her job and the process of filing applications for law school as
well as the extended paper work required for her insurance and updating her
student visa, all on top of having to prepare for several interviews with her
future professors. She told me that she had an interview today and that she
couldn’t hang out for very long today. I understood and wished her luck, and
told her if she needed any help preparing to let know. It’s hard for to imagine
having to manage so many different tasks all while being so far away from her
family and living in country where she was still in the process of learning the
language. We made arrangements for out next meeting to be in the CIES lounge
and we parted ways.
