This was the last tutoring session that I had with Michelle. As it was Thursday on the last week of classes, she was done with tests and did not have anything pressing to work on, so the meeting was sort of wrap up. I decided to try and make this a conversation oriented meeting- trying to get Michelle to speak as much as possible. I wrote questions on the board- What did you learn while at CIES? What do you think you need to work on for the next session? What are your new friends at CIES like? etc. These were good icebreakers that led into other bits of conversation. She told me about the graduation "ceremony" happening the next day including a pizza party. (She thinks pizza is so,so). We also talked about the torrential weather going on outside, using some of last week's vocabulary.
She asked me about hamburgers, and told me that her mother had asked her if she is eating hamburgers in America. Her mother dissuaded Michelle from doing this as she would like her to stay thin. Apparently Michelle has some plans to be a model, and has a family friend that is just doing that out of NYC. I explained to her that the closest cities for modeling action around Tallahassee are Atlanta and Miami.
I also learned that Michelle is interested in studying Engineering and Geology in University one day, and that she has knack for chemistry. She hopes to start TCC in January and is actually looking forward to taking Math and Science classes right away!
I helped introduce some vocabulary for her in terms of her jewelry (gold, silver, ring, bracelets, earrings, necklace, etc).
At then end of the meeting Michelle asked to exchange Facebook information. I look forward to keeping up with her progress. She is a dedicated student who gets a little better every time I see her. I can only expect the best from her studies in the USA.
