Olumayowa TP-8

Soooo Aadl has decided that he will be taking the GMAT exams soon. Who am I to prevent him, for all I know he might pass with flying colors. He complains often about his prep class and being the only foreign student there. By his account, the teacher has absolutely no idea of how to explain things to him, I don't blame the teacher because I've taken a prep course and it definitely is not a one on one deal. I decided that we should have a meet where I could take a look at the GMAT exam to see if I could be of any help. It blew my mind.

Here's a sample comprehension question from the exam:

The state of his affairs were such as to cause anxiety to his creditors who are established Boston bankers.
A. The state of his affairs were such as
B. The state of his affairs were as such
C. The state of his affairs was such as
D. The state of his affairs are such as
E. The state of his affair are such as
Answer: (C)
Explanation: The state of his affairs is in singular form as it talks about only one state. Therefore, the corresponding "be" verb used should also be singular. From amongst the five answer choices, we find the "be" verb to be singular only in the case of Choice (C). Hence, it is the correct answer.

I had to think carefully about this question and still was not correct. Aadl has a secret strategy to answering the questions that proved somewhat successful but he still has a very hard time understanding the questions and directions. He is very motivated to get into grad school to get a business degree, if he passes this exam I guess it shows how much he deserves entry into a good school. He's a funny guy, always assigning himself with way too much work for his own reasons; even though he does not understand much of what the teacher is saying, he still attends his GMAT prep course every Monday. Inshallah he'll do well, I already bet him a free meal at Samrat that he will.
