Aaron CP-5

On Wednesday after we were done with a tutoring session me and Abdullah started out conversation session. He started by asking me what I though about the Saudis in America, who drink and hang out with girls, as well as take part in other secular activities. He asked if it gave me a bad opinion on Islam, and Saudis in general. I told him of course not, and told him that typically most people wouldn't judge anybody for participating in acceptable norms here in America. I told him that I was impressed that he kept his beliefs and morals, despite the fact that this country is so liberal and temptation is so easy to give into. He then asked about my religion  and beliefs. being Jewish I really was interested  in seeing his reaction, because of the mass amount of propaganda trying to convince us that Wahhabi's are not very fond of Jews.  He really didn't react at all and went on to tell me all the similarities between our religions. He was very interested in the fact that I don't believe in an afterlife. He then asked me "what happens when you die?" I told him nothing. I think this was a hard concept for him to grasp being that religion is so ingrained in his culture. He asked what Jews believed Jesus to be and I told him that Jews don't believe Jesus to be Divine in any way. After, we went on to talk about his wife to be who is waiting for him when he returns. He seemed so excited to get back and get married and I'm not surprised considering he is in his mid twenties. He told me that Saudi males can have up to four wives  as long as they treat them equally. I found this conversation to be really interesting and learned so much from it.

  1. This is some great cultural exchange. It is interesting how he was concerned that his classmates actions might reflect badly on S.A. or Islam. This is a great example of a high context, group culture.
