Youshimi has made good progress in her essay writing. When I read her essay for the first time during our first meeting, she could only write some basic simple sentences. However, now she could write an effective essay by using some complex and compound sentences with a good structure. I was so delighted to realize her progress.
At the beginning of this tutoring, Youshimi were very excited to tell me that she had got a high score in her recent essay writing. She showed me her essay. Yes! she did a great job in her essay organization! In order to help her to write more complex and compound sentences, I decided to continue to teach her more knowledge about common English transition words and phrases. I had printed out a handout about this topic before I started this tutoring. So we worked together to learn each type of these words and phrases, including adding information, giving examples, showing a contrast, showing a concession, showing a similarity, showing a result, establishing time relation or sequence, showing a condition, explaining or emphasizing, giving an alternative.
When we learned each section of the handout, I asked Youshimi to read the transitions firstly, figure out the new vocabulary for her, and read all the examples to make sure that she could understand all of these words and phrases. Also, I reminded her to concentrate on the right positions and punctuations when she use these transitions.
Finally, we reviewed punctuation rules together, and I asked her to choose one transition from each section to make a sentence. We checked all the sentences together, and I helped her to correct a couple of beautiful mistakes in her sentences.
Hopefully, the tutoring about writing could result in her more progress!
