Hussam’s last day was bittersweet,
we had a really great dynamic and once I figured out what kind of assignments
were his favorite, the tutoring sessions were successful. I even enjoyed picking
out the articles and vocabulary words for him, it made me think and he always
took them very seriously, especially when they related to his field.
For our last day I decided to
lighten up on the psychology articles and chose instead to give him a fun
reading assignment…The Hunger Games.
I tried to pick a part of the book which would be action packed and grab his
attention, I decided to focus on the scene where Katniss is about to enter the
field and is trying to decide whether or not to take Heymitch’s advice and run
for the woods or attempt to gather supplies at the cornucopia. The effect
wasn’t quite the same as Hussam read it, but he was able to follow the language
fairly easily minus the whole cornucopia thing, he figured it out though once I
drew a picture. He said he really liked the book and felt that the difficulty level was perfect for him! I know he was trying to
figure out conversation topics for meeting people and I figured that The Hunger
Games was pretty popular, if he found himself at a loss of topics when meeting
people on campus he could bring the book up…I think most people have read the
book, seen the movie or heard enough about it to have some sort of opinion. He
said he couldn’t wait to buy the book once he returned to Missouri and that we could talk about it
online. He was also fascinated by my Kindle Fire on which we did most of the
assignments and reading, he decided he would get one of those too!

Before we left we got one of his
friends to take a picture of us, it was kind of funny because he was nervous to
get too close to me (we had had a previous conversation before where he told me
girls make him uncomfortable) so we have an awkward distance between us. Either
way, we felt it was appropriate to take the picture standing in front of a map
of the U.S.A.
So far we have kept in touch; I wish him the best in everything!
