I met with Jesus at lunch. I had some activities prepared for him, but he was enthusiastic on doing some work with modals. He showed me some notes he had taken on the subject from an ESL website that he said helped him understand the concept a bit better. I began by looking at some modal work he had done in class and helped him correct his "beautiful mistakes." He remembered that he needed to call his guardian to ask for a ride later that day due to an after class obligation. I thought this was an excellent opportunity to practice modals. I asked him what points he wanted to get across to his guardian, and we wrote out a script together of what he could say when they spoke on the phone.
It went a little something like:
Salutations of some sort. I need to go to a lab after class today. I should be done by 4:15. Would it be possible for you to pick me up later? If not, it is ok, I can attend tomorrow.
It was a bit more filled out than this, but I gave the script to Jesus to use.
We then worked a bit on articles. We refreshed some material on the difference between definite and indefinite. I then presented him with an ESL computer game in which the player selects the correct article to complete the sentence from multiple choice. If you get the answer correct, you have a chance to shoot a basketball. Jesus did so so with the game, and got into the gentlemanly spirit of the sports aspect of the computer game. He said that he enjoyed it.
We then read a few paragraphs that used quite a bit of articles from a BBC English learning website. I read one, while he read the next, and so on.
Nothing better than real world practice and application!
