I met with Michelle at CIES and before we started our session her Speaking Teacher Vicki talked to me for a moment about some trouble areas in Michelle's pronunciation. As I had already noticed, particular problems included "th" "r" and "b" sounds as well as the end of words.
We began by going over last weeks session on long and short vowels briefly. Michelle was adamant about going over things that she has been working on in class which include the family, illness and sports.
She had mentioned that she wanted to go over sports a few days prior to our meeting, so I showed her some photos from the Picture dictionary and asked her if she could tell me what sports were being played in the photos (soccer, basketball, etc.). She also mentioned that she wanted to work on adjectives, so I asked her to tell me things about the people in the pictures by asking questions such as "what color are his shorts?" "Is he short or tall?" and so on.
We then read a short paragraph on health which focused on the need to get off the couch and get some physical activity in your day. Michelle looks quite healthy, so I don't think that article was too relevant for her. But reading it out loud is! Her pronunciation is slowly improving each time I met with her.
I went to the board and asked her to tell me about her family. As she told me her family members I made an impromptu family tree on the board. I then asked her if she had been sick before asking her to use some of the vocabulary she had learned in class (doctor, cold, fever, ache, etc). I was quite impressed that she pulled out the "aches" ailments. I have found that "ache" is a difficult word to pronounce for any new English speaker. I asked her to tell me who in her family helps take care of her when she is sick- tying the two vocabulary sets together.
Michelle likes to end class by showing me her progress reports. As always, in reading and writing she is at 100%. Her trouble areas continue to be listening and speaking, but as I have said, improvements can be seen/heard every time I meet with her.
